La Casa de Bernarda Alba: A Timeless Classic Play
Saturday was a fun day. After 3 days of feeling down due to PMDD, the peace of mind was restored when my period started. Taking acetaminophen early on really helped with the cramps.
On this peaceful Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending a play put on by a small theater group. The play was “La Casa de Bernarda Alba,” based on a book by the renowned author Federico Garcia Lorca. Directed by Moon Sam-Hwa, the play was very engaging, suspenseful, and even humorous at times.

The Author of the Play
Author of the original book, Federico Garcia Lorca was born in Fuente Vaqueros, Granada, Spain. Lorca studied law, literature and music, moved to Madrid in 1919, where he focused on his writing. His major poetic works include “Romancero Gitano” (Gypsy Ballads, 1928) and “Poeta en Nueva York” (Poet in New York, published posthumously in 1940), which reflect his complex exploration of Andalusian culture, passion, and social injustice.
In addition to his poetic endeavors, Lorca is best known for three plays, “Blood Wedding” (1933), “Yerma” (1934), and “The House of Bernarda Alba” (1936), which are considered masterpieces of 20th-century theatre.
Lorca was executed by Nationalist forces at the start of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 for his liberal views and alleged homosexuality. His body has never been found, making him one of the “disappeared” of the war. Despite his tragic end, his works continue to inspire and influence a wide range of artists across the globe.
The Play
Directed by Moon Sam-Hwa, the play was very engaging, suspenseful, and to my surprise, also humorous. My friend told me that all the work directed by Ms. Moon tends to never lose that touch of wit no matter how dark the theme is. It was a compelling exploration of repression, passion, and conformity.
The robust cast breathed life into Lorca’s text with powerful performances, while the set design perfectly encapsulated the claustrophobic atmosphere. The Societal pressure and the desire for freedom were as relevant today as they were when Lorca penned the play. I could definitely relate and think of my own experiences. Standout moments included the climactic revelation scene, which was both shocking and poignant. Overall, a thought-provoking rendition of a timeless classic.
Wrap
I enjoyed every minute of the performance. And I left the theatre inspired by Lorca’s timeless classic. After a delightful time, we indulged ourselves to savory Summer nourishment: Soo-Yook, Korean beef slices tenderly cooked to perfection. We talked about the passionate acting and the context of the play and that always goes wonderfully well over soju.
Overall, it was a successful day of ending 56 hour fast with a delicious low carb meal.
